Is Barefoot Massage the same as a Foot Massage or Reflexology?

If you are already massaging with your feet, you’ve probably spoken with clients who perceive “Barefoot Massage” to be some kind of foot massage, like reflexology.

“Oh I LOVVVE to get my feet rubbed” is one of the top responses I get when I introduce myself as a Barefoot Massage Therapist.

::eyeroll:: <<OK, breathe, Jeni>>

Just laugh it off and show them this video:

“It’s not that I massage your feet, it’s that I use my feet to massage you!”

We recently wrote a blog explaining that ashiatsu is not the same thing as a foot massage or reflexology session – and it also explained that not all barefoot massage is ashiatsu. That post, and the links within it, will be a great resource for you to familiarize yourself with so that you can answer questions from potential clients who are honestly wondering what all this is about. (If you want an example of a blog post on this topic for your clients, check out what I wrote here for Heeling Sole.)

The people you talk to about your work are typically confused, but interested, and excited to learn more. They’ll be SO amazed when they finally get under your feet! So next time you hear that common misunderstanding about the difference between a foot massage and a barefoot massage, take that perfect opportunity to share your passion for massage therapy, and tell them how you just ~happen~ to use your feet to do it all.

Our mission at the Center for Barefoot Massage isn’t just to teach FasciAshi, not only elevate Barefoot Massage education to be on the cutting edge of our field, but also to inform the general public and the massage profession on what Barefoot Massage is. We want the many styles of this work, not just FasciAshi but all things barefoot, to be more easily recognized and understood. Ideally, we have a vision that the term “Barefoot Massage” will be just as recognized in the industry and our local communities as “Sports Massage” or “Hot Stone” is.

We’re taking steps to help us ALL raise the bar on our barefoot massages.

Join us and share this video to get a toe hold on your clients, and build a community around your feet.
